Madra is a blooming goddess in this festival of brilliant floral tones straight off the pages of 1954 Bazaar and onto the waiting form divine of our favorite Diva. This sumptuous gown of daffodil yellow taffeta features a 'cloche skirt', named so for the angled rise in the hem from back to front. A tiny fitted bodice is bowed beneath the bust and bourn aloft by the daring balloon skirt punctuated at the hemline with matching bows and lined in a striking deep fuchsia. 'Diamonds' virtually drip from the earlobes and collect at the throat into a sparkling necklace of multiple stones set in 'silver'. Madra sports her latest cosmetic reincarnation with a new and 'marvelous mouth' and daringly winged eyelids beneath her elaborately bouffant, platinum coiffure. Her accessories include a silver evening bag and sparkling white opera length gloves embroidered in silver. Her yellow pumps are tied at the toes with matching yellow bows, a bit of poetry for the most flowery of frocks.

Styled with an abbreviated bolero jacket sporting three-quarter sleeves and an expansive circular collar, our trim suit is a lovely exercise in three-color harmony. Well the name says it all! We have here a GORGEOUS little suit made of brown tweed flecked with gold lurex. Tailored and fitted to a pencil thin silhouette, SS is all about the details. A beige satin blouse with Peter Pan collar is trimmed with a long brown velvet ribbon tied at the neckline and rests over the larger lost boy collar of the jacket. This year all of our stars are getting the deluxe color treatment starting with the ‘Color Deal’ girls. For all you collectors who have wanted more color in the collection, we’ve created a group of dolls and fashions for Gene and her friends inspired by the color-saturated productions of the early 1950s. From basic dolls up, we’ve cornered the color-wheel with our ‘Color Deal’. The focus of our first mini-collection this year is Madra Lord, finally getting the star billing she so richly deserves with our ‘Postcard From Cannes’ suite. We’re presenting Madra during the early 1930s as a major star in her own right, long before Gene Marshall accidently steals her spotlight. Dressed in a collection of achingly beautiful 30s’ styles, Madra sports fashions that range from dressy slacks and hats to drop-dead gorgeous evening ensembles. Throw in a few furs and a liberal dose of diamante’ and you’ve got a “Postcard From Cannes” that you’ll save forever.

Spring 2008 - It's a deal, a Color Deal! The Color Deal girls are studies in variation on a basic 1950s’ silhouette. Dressed in brightly toned twill afternoon dresses of intricate cut and simple shape, our girls – Ivy, Gene, and Madra – are the clear-cut winners in this deal. Basically, our girls are exploring three versions of volume. All three women are wearing color-coordinated jewel-toned earrings and are accessorized with sparkling white lace-up mules, gloves, and scarves. These dresses are so beautifully cut as to be classic.

“C’est Moi” was one of the first things Madra Lord learned to say in France… and somehow it always seemed to apply. Starting at the top, the one hot note in the piece, Madra wears a marcel-waved titian bob, curling over the bow at the neckline of her georgette blouse. Perhaps there was a more beautiful dress there that night, but I doubt it. And maybe there was in the huge crowd a more beautiful woman there that warm summer evening. But at the ball that night, there was no other beautiful woman in attendance as beautifully dressed as Madra Lord. Nature and artifice combined perfectly in a bias cut confection. The fitted column of dusty pink satin is pleated at the criss-cross bodice into a halter neckline before disappearing altogether in the back into a diamante waterfall cascading from the neckline to a bare, lower back. The lavish skirt of this evening gown is cut and draped into an expanded train. Matching opera length gloves and a mile long white ‘fox’ stole combine with dramatic ‘diamonds’ at the wrist and ears for a look that gets looks, coming and going. Madra’s sleek black marcel wave is the one dark note in this pastel dream that is tethered to the dance floor only by pink satin pumps trimmed in silver.

What do you wear for a casual day in one of the dressiest places on earth? If you’re Madra Lord, we suggest it would be something like our Golden Riviera collection. After a morning of sunbathing au natural, you start your afternoon on the balcony in a beautifully draped sleeveless satin top and slender pants the shade of the deep pink bougainvillea spilling from the trellis. For a leisurely stroll to a late lunch, you slip into sparkling white oxfords trimmed with golden buckles and a quilted satin coat, gored at the waist, buttoned down the front and flared into the shape of a child’s drawing of a dress. You carry your daffodil yellow cloche in case there’s a breeze. One day at the FIT periodical library, I found the illustration I'm including. It was in either a 1930s Vogue or Bazaar and was a fashion report from Cannes, France as to the latest styles actually being seen in society. I was fascinated with the similarities and differences between these and the fashions we know from Hollywood movies of the time. Suddenly, with this amount of color, the black and white movies seemed VERY black and white. I wanted to share with you what that era's fashions look like outside of a movie fantasy. Thus, Madra took a holiday.

Black Calla is a dramatic 1930s' evening suit, long and lean like the sculptural blossom that is its namesake. The fitted jacket is cut of black faille and finished with satin cuffs and tapered waistband. The skirt is a form-fitting column of black satin, tapered through the thighs and flared into an inky black train. A sparkling white georgette blouse is long-sleeved with ruffles at the cuffs and collar, looking like nothing so much as bouquets of calla lilies. This lavishly ruffled neckline rests upon the circular faille lapels of the trim top. A "diamond" broach is worn at the bodice and matches the glittering earrings and hair clip.
